Dark Matter EFT, the Third -- Neutrino WIMPs
Sterile neutrinos coupling only to third-generation fermions are attractive
dark matter candidates. In an EFT approach we demonstrate that they can
generate the observed relic density without violating constraints from direct
and indirect detection. Such an EFT represents a gauged third-generation
model, as well as third-generation scalar or vector leptoquarks. LHC
measurements naturally distinguish the different underlying models.Comment: 27+7 pages, 7 figure
A two species trap for chromium and rubidium atoms
We realize a combined trap for bosonic chromium 52Cr and rubidium 87Rb atoms.
First experiments focus on exploring a suitable loading scheme for the combined
trap and on studies of new trap loss mechanisms originating from simultaneous
trapping of two species. By comparing the trap loss from the 87Rb
magneto-optical trap (MOT) in absence and presence of magnetically trapped
ground state 52Cr atoms we determine the scattering cross section of
sigma_{inelRbCr}=(5.0+-4.0)*10^{-18}m^2 for light induced inelastic collisions
between the two species. Studying the trap loss from the Rb magneto-optical
trap induced by the Cr cooling-laser light, the photoionization cross section
of the excited 5P_{3/2} state at an ionizing wavelength of 426nm is measured to
be sigma_{p}=(1.1+-0.3)*10^{-21}m^2
From ‘Hood’ to Good – Dealing with Stigmatizing Spatial Representations in Everyday Life
Media reports on everyday life in US-American under-resourced and racialized neighbourhoods pre- dominantly cover one theme: violence and crime. The tragic occurrence of shootings, dead people, and gang crime are at the centre of news headlines. This singular perspective on such areas and their residents produces a stigma that affects people’s everyday lives and yet does not cover what it means to live in such an area. By using qualitative interviews with residents and representatives of community organizations, we spotlight the daily practices that illustrate the contested symbolic meaning of the ‘hood’ and the potential redevelopment discourses of the Chicago neighbourhood South Shore. The data provide insights into the heterogeneity of the social groups that live in the area and execute practices of social distinctions attached to spaces, as they become apparent with our examples of busy corners at commercial strips and the planned Obama Presidential Center
Bose-Einstein condensation of chromium
We report on the generation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas of
chromium atoms, which will make studies of the effects of anisotropic
long-range interactions in degenerate quantum gases possible. The preparation
of the chromium condensate requires novel cooling strategies that are adapted
to its special electronic and magnetic properties. The final step to reach
quantum degeneracy is forced evaporative cooling of 52Cr atoms within a crossed
optical dipole trap. At a critical temperature of T~700nK, we observe
Bose-Einstein condensation by the appearance of a two-component velocity
distribution. Released from an anisotropic trap, the condensate expands with an
inversion of the aspect ratio. We observe critical behavior of the condensate
fraction as a function of temperature and more than 50,000 condensed 52Cr
atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Formation of 4-hydroxynonenal and further aldehydic mediators of inflammation during bromotrichlorornethane treatment of rat liver cells
Bromotrichloromethane (CBrCl3) treatment is a model for studies on molecular mechanisms of haloalkane toxicity with some advantages compared with CCl4 treatment. The formation of 4-hydroxynonenal and similar aldehydic products of lipid peroxidation, which play a role as mediators of inflammatory processes, was clearly demonstrated in rat hepatocytes treated with CBrCl3. It may be assumed that haloalkane toxicity is connected with the biological effects of those inflammation mediatory aldehydic compounds
CAR FOLLOWING MODELS FOR PHENOMENONS ON THE HIGHWAY
Car following models are used to describe the behavior of a number of cars on the road dependent on the distance to the car in front. We introduce a system of ordinary differential equations and perform a theoretical and numerical analysis in order to find solutions that reflect various traffic situations. We present three different variations of the model motivated by reality
Robust -wave superconductivity of infinite-layer nickelates
Motivated by the recent observation of superconductivity in strontium doped
NdNiO, we study the superconducting instabilities in this system from
various vantage points. Starting with first-principles calculations, we
construct two distinct tight-binding models, a simpler single-orbital as well
as a three-orbital model, both of which capture the key low energy degrees of
freedom to varying degree of accuracy. We study superconductivity in both
models using the random phase approximation (RPA). We then analyze the problem
at stronger coupling, and study the dominant pairing instability in the
associated t-J model limit. In all instances, the dominant pairing tendency is
in the channel, analogous to the cuprate superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures+ 5 pages, PRB Editors' suggestio
Van Hove tuning of AV3Sb5 kagome metals under pressure and strain
From first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of the kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=Cs, K, Rb) under isotropic and anisotropic pressure. Charge-ordering patterns are found to be unanimously suppressed, while there is a significant rearrangement of p-type and m-type Van Hove point energies with respect to the Fermi level. Already for moderate tensile strain along the V plane and compressive strain normal to the V layer, we find that a Van Hove point can be shifted to the Fermi energy. Such a mechanism provides an invaluable tuning knob to alter the correlation profile in the kagome metal, and suggests itself for further experimental investigation. It might allow us to reconcile possible multidome superconductivity in kagome metals not only from phonons but also from the viewpoint of unconventional pairing
